Herons left, just egrets at the rookery now

May 30th, 2007 · No Comments

The heron’s have moved onto bigger and better things. I was hoping to see some of the young ones out and about but they have moved off. The rookery is still about half full of egrets. The little ones are practicing flying going from one tree top to the next.

Baby ducklings everywhere

May 25th, 2007 · No Comments

Most of the ponds and bayous have baby ducklings along them. Some were only a week old, some several weeks. You’d think in a warm climate like this they would have been born a few months earlier than they are in New England. But this is the same time they usually show up there too.

Another visit to the rookery

May 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

We went back by the heron-egret rookery this afternoon. The male herons were a bit more protective than last week. Two of them flew by and growled. They growl like swans or dogs do but much louder.

Some of the young male herons were play fighting in the nests and growling at each other. I could hear them from more than a 100′ away.

The baby egrets are loosing their baby feathers for real feathers and many of them were taking short flights.
