Mocking birds and squirrels

May 29th, 2006 · No Comments

We’ve had some mocking birds hanging around. I’m not sure if they are here for the summer or just passing through? They strafe and chase and otherwise harass the squirrels much to my delight. So I decided to try hanging bird feeders again. One plastic seed dispenser and two of the seed ones that you just hang from a tree. That lasted all of about 15 minutes before the squirrels were on them. So down they came.

I then strung a wire between two trees and hung the plastic seed dispenser from that. That took about an hour. They climbed down some branches too near the feeders and jumped from there. Off with the branches!

Took another hour or so for the little rodents to figure out how to jump from the tree to the feeder. Today we added a metal squirrel baffle and coated it with Vaseline for good measure. And just for fun added ground black pepper to the seed. The birds are not supposed to be able to taste or feel the hot foods but the squirrels can. So far so good but it has only been a few hours.
